What the DOT Physical Covers
The FMCSA-mandated DOT physical is a full evaluation of fitness to operate a commercial motor vehicle. Vision testing requires at least 20/40 distant acuity in each eye with or without correction, adequate field of vision, and color recognition. Hearing is evaluated via forced whisper at 5 feet. Blood pressure thresholds determine certificate duration. Stage 1 hypertension (140-159/90-99) results in a one-year certificate; Stage 2 requires treatment before certification.
Urinalysis screens for glucose (diabetes), protein (kidney function), and other systemic conditions affecting driving safety. This is not a drug test, which is conducted separately by your employer.
