IASTM / Graston Technique

Breaking Down What Massage Can’t Reach

Instrument-Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (IASTM), also called the Graston Technique or myofascial scraping, uses a smooth stainless steel instrument to detect and treat fascial adhesions, scar tissue, and chronic soft tissue restrictions that don’t respond to stretching, foam rolling, or conventional massage.

The instrument amplifies the clinician’s sense of touch, allowing Dr. Muren or Dr. Hall to detect restrictions in the fascia that their hands alone cannot isolate. When the tool passes over a restriction, you feel a gritty, sometimes slightly painful sensation. That’s the adhesion. The instrument then breaks it down through controlled microtrauma that triggers the body’s natural healing response.

How It Heals

The Healing Mechanism

Controlled microtrauma from IASTM triggers an inflammatory response, intentionally. This recruits fibroblasts and growth factors to the area, promoting collagen remodeling and tissue repair. Chronic injuries often stall because the body no longer recognizes them as “active.” IASTM restarts the healing process by making the tissue acute again, but in a controlled, directed way.

Conditions We Treat

What IASTM Addresses at Full Swing

Plantar fasciitis is one of the most common IASTM targets we treat. Scraping along the plantar fascia, Achilles tendon, and gastrocnemius complex breaks down the adhesive tissue maintaining chronic heel pain, typically combined with StemWave shockwave for the fastest results. Achilles tendinopathy involves degenerated, disorganized collagen that IASTM restimulates to remodel into functional tissue.

For the shoulder, rotator cuff tendinitis and supraspinatus restrictions respond well to IASTM combined with targeted rehab exercises. Carpal tunnel syndrome and forearm tightness from office work, manual labor, or grip-dominant sports are another common application, often more effective than wrist splinting alone. For cervical and thoracic restrictions, particularly in patients with whiplash injuries or years of accumulated postural dysfunction, IASTM addresses the fascial component that adjustments alone can't fully reach.

Post-surgical rehab is another strong indication. Scar tissue forms along incision lines and surrounding tissue after any surgery, and IASTM introduced at the appropriate healing phase breaks it down and restores functional movement.

IASTM at Full Swing on Beach Blvd

Full Swing Healthcare is at 13770 Beach Blvd, Suite 4, Jacksonville, FL 32224. Dr. Muren and Dr. Hall both perform IASTM as part of integrated treatment plans that typically include chiropractic adjustments, myofascial cupping, and StemWave shockwave therapy depending on the condition and how long it’s been present.

If you’ve had a chronic injury that massage and stretching haven’t fixed, IASTM is often the missing piece. So is dry needling, which addresses the neuromuscular trigger point component that IASTM treats from the fascial side. Call (904) 539-3352 or book online. Same-day appointments are frequently available.
