Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression
Non-surgical spinal decompression for disc herniations, sciatica, and chronic back pain.
How Spinal Decompression Works
Spinal decompression therapy uses a motorized table to apply gentle, computer-controlled traction forces to the spine, affecting the cervical and lumbar spine. This cyclical stretching and relaxation creates negative intradiscal pressure, essentially creating a vacuum effect inside the disc that draws herniated or bulging material back into place and promotes the movement of nutrients and oxygen into the disc. Over a series of sessions, this creates the conditions the body needs to heal damaged discs naturally.
It is important to note that spinal decompression is not simply traction. The precise control of angle, force, and duration that modern decompression systems provide produces results that passive traction cannot replicate.
Who Is a Candidate?
Spinal decompression is most effective for patients with herniated or bulging discs, degenerative disc disease, spinal stenosis, sciatica, or posterior facet syndrome. It is also appropriate for patients who have had prior back surgery and continue to experience pain, a condition sometimes called failed back surgery syndrome.
Not everyone is a candidate. Patients with spinal fractures, severe osteoporosis, spinal instability, or certain implants may not be suitable. Dr. Mammales will conduct a thorough evaluation before recommending decompression to confirm it is safe and appropriate for your situation.
What the Research Shows
Multiple clinical studies have demonstrated significant outcomes with spinal decompression. A study published in Orthopedic Technology Review found that 86 percent of ruptured disc patients reported relief of symptoms after undergoing decompression therapy. For many patients, it represents a genuine alternative to back surgery.
What to Expect
Decompression sessions typically last 30 to 45 minutes. Most patients find the therapy relaxing. A full course of treatment usually consists of 15 to 30 sessions over four to six weeks, often combined with chiropractic adjustments, therapeutic exercise, and electrical muscle stimulation for a complete outcome.
