Pregnancy and Chiropractic

Why Pregnancy Causes Spinal Pain

Pregnancy changes everything about how the body carries weight and how the spine functions. As the baby grows, the center of gravity shifts forward. The lumbar spine curves more. The pelvis tilts. Ligaments loosen under the influence of relaxin, which is helpful for delivery but creates joint instability in the meantime. Most pregnant women experience some degree of lower back pain, pelvic girdle pain, or sciatic discomfort as a direct result of these changes.

The frustrating part is that medication options are limited during pregnancy. Many women simply try to manage and wait. But there is another option. Chiropractic care is safe throughout pregnancy, is well-studied for pregnancy-related back pain, and does not carry the risks associated with medication use.

Dr. Muren has experience working with pregnant patients at all stages. The techniques used during pregnancy are gentle, low-force, and adapted to the pregnant body. No technique is ever used that could put pressure on the abdomen. Patients are positioned using specialized cushioning and pillows that accommodate the belly comfortably.

Conditions Commonly Treated During Pregnancy

Lower Back Pain

The most common pregnancy complaint. The growing belly shifts your center of gravity forward, increasing lumbar curve and compressing the lower spinal joints. Chiropractic adjustments restore motion to restricted segments and reduce the nerve irritation that comes with them. Most patients feel meaningful relief within two to three visits.

Sciatica During Pregnancy

Sciatic pain during pregnancy is usually caused by piriformis tightness or lumbar nerve compression as the body changes posture to compensate for belly weight. It can cause pain, tingling, or numbness down the leg. We address the lumbar joints, the piriformis, and the surrounding soft tissue to decompress the nerve and reduce symptoms.

Pelvic Girdle Pain

Relaxin loosens the sacroiliac joints and the pubic symphysis to prepare for delivery. When these joints become unstable or restricted asymmetrically, pelvic girdle pain develops. This shows up as pain at the back of the pelvis, groin, or inner thighs. Specific pelvic adjustments restore balance without excessive force.

Round Ligament Pain

The round ligaments connect the uterus to the groin. As the uterus grows, these ligaments stretch and can cause sharp, stabbing pain with sudden movements, especially when rolling over in bed or standing from a seated position. Chiropractic and soft tissue work reduce tension in the structures around the ligament to minimize the strain.

Upper Back and Rib Pain

As posture changes during pregnancy, the thoracic spine and ribs often develop restrictions that cause mid-back tightness, rib head subluxations, and pain with breathing. These restrictions respond well to gentle thoracic adjustments and soft tissue work on the paraspinal muscles.

Neck Pain and Headaches

Fatigue, sleep position changes, and postural shifts during pregnancy create upper cervical restrictions and upper trap tension. Cervicogenic headaches during pregnancy are common and respond well to gentle cervical adjustments. Medication-free relief matters even more when you are pregnant.

Is Chiropractic Safe During Pregnancy?

Yes. Chiropractic care during pregnancy is safe when performed by a practitioner with experience in prenatal care. The American Pregnancy Association recognizes chiropractic as a safe and drug-free option for managing pregnancy-related musculoskeletal pain.

Dr. Muren uses modified techniques and specialized positioning throughout pregnancy. No high-velocity thrust is ever directed toward the abdomen. The Activator instrument-assisted technique and modified drop table work are commonly used for pregnant patients because they deliver effective adjustments with less force and no prone positioning required in the later trimesters.

We have worked with patients in all three trimesters including up to the days before delivery. Adjustments in the third trimester can be particularly helpful for managing the compressive load on the lower spine and keeping the pelvis in proper alignment heading into labor.

If your OB or midwife has concerns or restrictions, bring those to us and we will coordinate your care around them. No referral is required to be seen in Florida, but communication between your providers is always a good thing.

What to Expect at Your First Visit

Your first visit takes 45 to 60 minutes. We review your full health history, your current stage of pregnancy, any specific areas of discomfort, and any restrictions from your OB or midwife. We assess your posture, spinal mechanics, and pelvic alignment before determining which techniques are appropriate for you.

Most pregnant patients are seen weekly or biweekly depending on their stage and symptom level. First and second trimester patients with mild discomfort may come in once every two to three weeks. Third trimester patients dealing with more significant pelvic or lumbar pain often benefit from weekly care.

After delivery, most patients transition to postpartum chiropractic care to address the changes that come with nursing, carrying, and the postpartum recovery period. The two phases of care are closely connected.
