Can a Chiropractor Help with Headaches?
It depends on the type of headache. But for cervicogenic headaches and tension headaches, chiropractic care is very effective and often produces dramatic results.
Cervicogenic headaches originate in the upper cervical spine. Restriction or dysfunction in the C1 and C2 joints refers pain into the head in a predictable pattern, usually starting at the base of the skull and spreading forward toward the eye or forehead. These headaches are often misdiagnosed as migraines or tension headaches because the pain presents in the head, not the neck. But the source is mechanical and chiropractic is the right tool.
Tension headaches are driven by chronic muscle contraction in the upper trap and suboccipital region. Extended screen time, poor workstation ergonomics, and stress all contribute. Chiropractic adjustments combined with soft tissue work on the cervical and upper thoracic region can dramatically reduce the frequency and intensity of tension headaches. We've had patients who were having multiple headaches per week report they stopped entirely after a few weeks of care.
Migraines have a more complex neurological component and chiropractic may not be the primary treatment, though some migraine patients do benefit from cervical adjustments that reduce the spinal triggers that can set off an episode. We'll assess your specific headache pattern on your first visit and tell you honestly what we think we can do for you.
