What Is a DOT Physical and Who Needs One?
A DOT physical is a federally mandated medical examination for anyone who operates a commercial motor vehicle in interstate commerce. It's required to obtain and maintain a CDL.
The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) requires that commercial motor vehicle operators pass a medical examination and carry a valid Medical Examiner's Certificate. The exam must be conducted by a licensed medical examiner on the FMCSA's National Registry. Dr. Cody Muren at Full Swing Healthcare is on that registry and conducts DOT physicals regularly.
The exam evaluates vision, hearing, blood pressure and cardiovascular health, respiratory function, neurological status, urinalysis for glucose and protein, and musculoskeletal fitness. Any condition that might impair safe driving ability is flagged. Common disqualifying conditions include uncontrolled hypertension, certain cardiac conditions, uncorrected vision below the federal standard, and untreated sleep apnea. If you have a managed condition, bring your treatment documentation.
Most drivers who come to Full Swing Healthcare for their DOT physical are in and out within 30 to 45 minutes. We know the regulations, we run efficient appointments, and we give you a straight answer about your certificate status before you leave. If you pass, you walk out with your Medical Examiner's Certificate that day. Drivers also benefit from our chiropractic care for occupational back pain between physicals.
